This is a study of Brazil's ethnic, political, economic, industrial and social history. It examines the blessings of the country's ethnic diversity, wealth of natural resources, and rapid economic and industrial development, as well as the problems, such as its history of political instability and military rule, and the inflation and international debt which have plagued the nation as it has emerged as a major Third World power. The book provides a detailed look not only at Brazil's past and its national identity, but its visions for its future.
Biografía del autor:
Thomas E. Skidmore, Professor of History and Director of the Center for Latin American Studies at Brown University, is the author of Black into White: Race and Nationality in Brazilian Thought, The Politics of Military Rule in Brazil, 1964-1985 and, with Peter H. Smith, Modern Latin America, Fourth Edition (all available from Oxford University Press).
