Born to an Iraqi-Jewish family, Joseph Braude studied Near Eastern languages at Yale and Arabic and Islamic history at Princeton. He is fluent in Arabic, Persian, and Hebrew, and has lived, studied, and worked in most Middle Eastern capitals.
