Actually, problems were generated by Wildeve --- infatuated with Eustacia Vye, Wildeve was using propsed wedlock to Thomasin simply to make Eustacia jealous. When Venn learns of the romance between Eustacia and Wildeve, his proposal to Thomasin irejected, he resolves to intervene on her behalf, which he continues throughout the novel. His attempts to persuade Eustacia to allow Wildeve to marry Thomasin comes to naught.
