Beginning in 1845 at the Fund's inception, this book takes the reader through its long and sometimes turbulent history. The Fund, established by Queen Victoria, was set up to administer the contributions made by the public for the families of those killed in the Crimean War. But this was only the beginning for a unique organization which was to provide help for the widows and orphans of servicemen through every successive conflict and numerous disasters at sea from then until now.
