Great Britain has outfiripped rival fiates in her commercial greatnefs: let us therefore endeavour to preferve that afcen dancy, which is fo efi'ential to our welfare in the convulfed condition of Europe, by the only means that can do it effeétually. That is, by recurring to fimplicity of living and manners, fo as to check the increafing pre. Valence of nervous diforders; which, if not reltrained foon, mull: inevitably fap our phy fical {trength of conflitution; make us an eafy conqueft to our invaders; and ultimate. Ly convert us into a nation of flaves and Ideots.

The rapid sale of a large impression of this work having rendered another edition necessary, many important facts are now added, so as to make the history of the Nervous Constitution as full as the present state of knowledge will admit of. Since the publication of this book, I have been consulted by letter, from different parts of England, by a numerous lift of nervous patients, who seem to have been much gratified by the explanation which is here given of these diseases; and I can now add with great pleasure that the whole have recovered their health.

My grateful thanks are justly due to those members of the profession, in London and other large towns, who have, with a liberality and benevolence worthy of their learning and eminence, so warmly recommended this treatise, as calculated to produce much good in families of the nervous temperament. An opinion expressed with such disinterestedness, will amply secure my labours against the cavils of the ignorant and illiberal.
