Con su estilo gráfico, la distorsión de las figuras y el desafío a los ideales convencionales de belleza, Egon Schiele (1890-1918) fue un pionero del expresionismo austriaco y uno de los retratistas más asombrosos del siglo XX.
Tras un breve flirteo con el brillante estilo art nouveau de Gustav Klimt, su mentor, Klimt desarrolló su propia estética, mucho más cruda y agresiva, de líneas bruscas, tonos mórbidos y figuras alargadas. Sus numerosos retratos y autorretratos dejaron anonadada a la clase alta de Viena por su intensidad psicológica y sexual sin precedentes, que favorecía las poses eróticas, reveladoras o perturbadoras, en las que los modelos se acurrucan en el suelo, se tienden con las piernas abiertas, fulminan con la mirada al espectador y muestran sus genitales. Sus modelos podían ser esqueléticos y enfermizos o, por el contrario, fuertes y sensuales.
Muchos de sus coetáneos consideraban la obra de Schiele fea e incluso cuestionable moralmente, y en 1912 el artista cumplió una breve sentencia de cárcel por obscenidad. En la actualidad, su obra es admirada por su revolucionaria visión de la figura humana y por su peculiar trazo, directo y apasionado, casi furioso. Este libro presenta obras clave de Egon Schiele que son un reflejo de su breve pero intensa carrera y de su profunda contribución al desarrollo del arte moderno, que ha alcanzado a talentos contemporáneos como Tracey Emin y Jenny Saville.
Reinhard Steiner (nacido en 1950) es profesor emérito de Historia del Arte en la Universidad de Stuttgart. Se ha especializado en el arte medieval tardío y el Renacimiento, así como el arte de los siglos XIX y XX.
