Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First edition. Foreword by James Alan McPherson. Afterword by John Casey. Light offsetting on rear fly from a laid in newspaper clipping (review by Joyce Carol Oates), slight toning on endpapers from binder's glue, near fine in a very good or better dust jacket with moderate edgewear, and a lightly sunned spine. In the 1983 *New York Times* review written by Joyce Carol Oates she praises the author's posthumous collection stating: "Twelve stories, set in an impoverished region of West Virginia, by a young writer of such extraordinary gifts that one is tempted to compare his debut to Hemingway's." Contains a short blurb by Margaret Atwood on the front flap. Author's first book.

Buch Erstausgabe
Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. [44pp]; sewn in letterpress card covers; 224 x 151 mm pamphlet. Hand-printed by editors Dennis E. Barker & D.L. Malcolm in an edition of 150 handbound copies. Mast: "NIGHTWORK, a non-funded magazine of fiction, will be published irregularly." Colophon: "This first issue consists of 150 copies printed from Linotype Fairfield. Titling hand-set in Centaur and Arrighi type." The first (& possibly sole) issue, it has the appearance of a fine-press booklet more than a journal (covers free of type but for the title; absence of editorial matter; letterpress printing; & hand-binding). The volume concludes with the last of six stories (besides six newspaper articles) published during Breece Pancake's short life (preceded by three in two student newspapers in 1976; & two in The Atlantic Monthly, 1977/8); all six published while he was a graduate student in the creative writing program at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville (1976-9). The issue also includes a story each by Al Cetta, Nils Nolo, & Ronald Bean. An elliptical gem, 'Time and Again' was subsequently referred to by Joyce Carol Oates (in her review of the posthumous Collected Stories, 1983) as one of Pancake's "relatively weak stories" though "nonetheless compelling". Considering limitation alone, by far the author's scarcest (& least transient) publication. Produced without editorial or ancillary matter, the issue readily qualifies as an anthology (particularly if it was the sole issue); making it a candidate for Pancake's first book (not unlike the 1957 Inferno Press monograph, Four New Poets: Brautigan; Hoberman; Larsen; Singer). Identified in the Thomas Douglass bibliography as having been issued September 1978. Waterstained 8cm along spine (from crown), & across the top edge. Upper cover bears a 1cm closed tear to fore-edge. The rare first book by the author Kurt Vonnegut considered "merely the best writer, the most sincere writer I've ever read". Judging from its extreme scarcity, & considering the fact that it was a fledgling venture, together with the labour required to sew 150 copies by hand, it is not inconceivable that some (if not much) of the edition remained unbound. WorldCat locates a single copy.
