After a general introduction there are three main sections. The 1st, Greece, runs from the 8th to the 4th centuries BC, a period unparalleled in history for its brilliance in literature, philosophy & the visual arts. The 2nd, Greece & Rome, deals w/ the Hellenization of the Middle East by the monarchies established in the area conquered by Alexander the Great, the growth of Rome, & the impact of the two cultures on one another. The 3rd, Rome, covers the foundation of the Roman Empire by Augustus & its consolidation in the 1st two centuries AD, while an envoi discusses some aspects of the later Empire & its influence on western civilization, not least through the adoption of Christianity. Within each section chapters dealing w/ political & social history are interspersed w/ chapters on literature, philosophy, & the arts; the historical framework is reinforced by maps & chronological charts. There are bibliographies & a full index & the book is illustrated w/ 16 pp. of color plates & more than 250 b-w illus. integrated w/ the text. All of the 30 contributors are acknowledged authorities in their fields.
