Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Maurice Greiffenhagen and Charles Kerr (illustrator). 1st Edition. Rare First edition - mixed state. "Combining the sheets from the Spencer Blackett (SB) original 1889 impression and with Griffith Farran's (GF) later binding. GF acquired the plates from SB along with some (unknown number) unbound sheets from SB's regular and large paper issues. GF bound up the extra sheets including SB's original title page dated 1889 and the catalog dated Sept. 1889, without any change in page or binding size, The binding is similar to the SB original except it is lettered in silver instead of gilt, adds "Illustrated" to the front cover, and has GF's imprint on the spine. McKay notes a SB/GF mixed state large paper variant, whereas the present copy is the mixed state of the regular issue and is unrecorded in the Haggard bibliographies. GF also reprinted copies of the regular edition from the original SB plates, but reduced the binding and page size by a quarter inch, inserted a new title page with its own imprint , and bound in its own catalog at rear. Like the mixed state variant, it is lettered in silver and has the GF imprint on the spine. Whatmore gives the publication date of this later reduced-size reprint as 1891, although it could have been earlier since the (undated) catalog shows no titles later than 1889 [from copy ofJames Larson]. It is therefore likely that this mixed state copy was bound prior to the reprint considering the SB title page, catalog, and original page size." [Analysis by noted Haggard collector Al Tella] Brown pebbled and smooth cloth 3/4 boards, stamped in silver on spine and cover, lined in black on spine and both covers, coated black end papers. 34 illustrations; eight of which are full page [all present] by Maurice Greiffenhagen and Charles Kerr. Anthology of four stories. London: Spencer Blackett/Griffith and Farran (1889), 331 pages + one page ad and 32 page catalog dated September 1889 at rear. Good - cloth wear, cracked hinges, penciled name to f.f.e., cracked book block.
