Cloth. Zustand: Very Good. Charles Kerr (illustrator). A new edition of this unusual historical novel by H. Rider Haggard, with illustrations by British artist Charles Kerr. A new edition of this work, published in 1892. First published earlier the same year. With tissue-guarded frontispiece and twenty-two evocative monochrome plates by British artist Charles Kerr. Collated complete. This work also contains twenty-four pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear of the book.Written by H. Rider Haggard, this work is a historical novel set in South Africa which narrates the birth and early life of the protagonist Umslopogaas: the son of a Zulu king. The work is unusual for this period as it contains only South African and black characters. In original cloth binding with gilt titles. Externally, very smart with the odd mark to front and rear boards. Minor bumping to head and tail of spine. Contemporary ink inscription to back of front free end paper, dated 1895. Slight rubbing to rear joint, causing minor splits. Nada the Lily is an historical novel by English writer H. Rider Haggard, published in 1892. It is said to be inspired by Haggard's time in South Africa (1875?82). It was illustrated by Charles H. M. Kerr. The novel tells the tale of the origin and early life of the hero Umslopogaas, the unacknowledged son of the great Zulu king and general Chaka, and his love for "the most beautiful of Zulu women", Nada the Lily. Chaka was a real king of the Zulus but Umslopogaas was invented by Haggard. He first appeared as an elderly but vigorous warrior in Allan Quatermain (1887). He also appears in the novel She and Allan (1921). Nada the Lily is unusual for a Victorian novel in that its entire cast of characters is South African and black. Nada the Lily features magic and ghosts as part of its plot. There is some anecdotal evidence[citation needed] that Umslopogaas might have been based on an actual person, although not as described in the book. He would have been a Swazi not a Zulu. Ref K 2.
