Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. Revised Edition. John Cumming wrote in the introduction in part: "Theodore Potter's reminiscences are, in spite of such faults, an intriguing and exciting reading experience. Few men enjoyed such a variety of adventures over such a long period of time, extending form the pioneer days in Michigan into the twentieth century, as well as the pioneer period in California and Minnesota. The changes which he witnessed would by themselves make an impressive volume; but the fact that Theodore Edgar Potter was an active participant in bringing about many of these changes makes his narrative even more significant." See Cowan p.497: "The author gives us his experiences in an interesting and readable style." The first half of the work is devoted to the trip across the plains, and records in detail the hardships and adventures of the journey, with sketches of the country traversed, Indian tribes, etc. The ascend part narrates the author's life and experiences at the diggings, has adventures with Sonora Grays, lynching and marauding in southern California, his adventures in Walker's filibustering expedition, his return eastward to Minnesota in 1863 and campaign against the Sioux in the Dakota Indian War. The 1913 first edition is quite scarce today and the 1978 reprint is an important addition to anyone collecting on the Westward movement, the Civil War and the Indian Uprising that began in 1862 and pretty much culminated in the destruction of Custer and his troops at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. See Graff 3333 and Wright/Howes 511 for additional information. See also No. 1751 "The last chapter deals with the capture of the Younger Brothers. A near fine copy with light foxing in the edges. Dust Jacket is also near fine with just a hint of fading and light soiling. See also Mintz #374. "Potter treked overland in 1852 by ox team. He relates his doings in the California diggings and other daily events.

Hope you will enjoy having it. Best personal regards, George E. Walton. The Preface states that this was printed for the Potter family, his children and grandchildren. The Preface was written by George C. Sprague. Theodore Edgar Potter (1832-1910) was a member of the 1st Minnesota Cavalry Regiment which served in the U.S. Civil War. Includes chapters entitled: Boyhood Days, Across the Plains, In the Rockies, Across the Desert, Golden California, With the Sonora Grays, Under Walker in Nicaragua, Still a Wanderer, Early Days in Minnesota, The Sioux War, The Dakota Campaign, Under Thomas in Tennessee, and The Capture of the Younger Brothers. The Sonora Grays were apparently a California State militia company associated with Columbia, Tuolumne County. Capt. T. E. Potter. The career of this distinguished pioneer. Indian fighter and gold hunter is of interest to all readers of the history of our country. He was born in Saline, Washtenaw County, Michigan, March 10, 1832. and was the first white child born in Saline, Washtenaw County, Michigan, his birthplace being the first plastered house in the village, In the spring of 1857 he went to Minnesota with a surveying party, but it being at the time of the Spirit Lake War in southwestern Minnesota, he was given a commission as Captain of militia by the Governor of that State. In 1862, at the breaking out of the Sioux War, he took command of the Grayhorse Calvary and was at the siege of New Ulm, which lasted six days. He had charge of the only real frontier company, nearly every man of which had lost some members of his family by the Indians. He was present at the the execution of the thirty-eight chiefs at Mankato, Minnesota. He distinguished himself as an Indian fighter and had his horse shot from under him and was slightly wounded in the face. After the close of the Indian war, Capt. Potter organized the Eleventh Minnesota Regiment and went to the front in the War of the rebellion., as Captain of Company C, of that regiment. He participated in the battle of Nashville.
