Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fair. THE GILDED ROOSTER, A DRAMATIC NOVEL OF EMOTIONAL CONFLICT ON THE AMERICAN FRONTIER, Richard Emery Roberts, hardcover with clipped dust jacket, stated second impression, 1947. BOOK CONDITION: very good. The text block is in near fine condition, with no tears, dogears, or marks. Pages are age-toned. No bookplate or signature of a prior owner. Not a library book or remainder. The beige cloth boards are in good condition (two corners slightly bowed, very lightly bumped spine, tiny spot on front, red smudge on back). The dust jacket is in fair condition (intact, some small holes along the folds, some tears along the top and bottom edges, age-toned inside). 8 ¼ x 5 3/4, 249 pages, 13 ounces XX [From the dust jacket] While the attention of the country and the world was concentrated during the Civil War on the great campaigns and battles raging from Tennessee to the sea, there was another unknown war raging on the far Western Frontier. Taking advantage of the reduced garrisons holding the western territories, the Indians of the plains and the mountains went on the warpath in a desperate endeavor to win back their ancestral lands. The story unfolds against this ominous background. The scene is a small fort far out beyond Fort Laramie. Winter is coming on, and the small garrison holding the place faces the prospect of being cut off. The commanding officer of the fort, a major but recently detached from the Engineer Office in Washington, has never held an active field command before. Furthermore, by temperament and avocation he feels himself more the scholar than the man of action. However, having succeeded to the responsibility, he is determined to do his duty. The one man on whom all their lives depend is Jed Cooper, the scout. He is their eyes and ears; he knows the red man from a lifetime of association with him. He has the strength of a grizzly bear and the cunning of a cougar. He hates organized society red or white, and regrets that he has taken on this assignment as a scout. In fact he looks with contempt on the soldiers and officers and vents his anger by frequent assaults on anyone who crosses him. He glories in the name of The Gilded Rooster. Into this tense situation come a Captain and his lovely wife. He is a brute, obsessed with dreams of annihilating the Indians by reckless attacks and winning glory and promotion. To attain these he will stop at nothing and will sacrifice his wife's honor or anything else. She has learned to hate him and is prepared to free herself of him at any cost. Tragedy becomes inevitable when the Major and the scout find themselves both rivals for her affections, the one a man of honor though with power of life and death over everyone in the fort, the other accustomed to taking any woman he wants and confident of his own powers and indispensability to the garrison. The suspense becomes nearly unbearable as the Indians destroy half the force in a bloody ambush, while the three men who hold the fate of the detachment in their hands and the woman play out their hands. Distinguished by its writing, this is far more than a novel of dramatic action; it is a profound and revealing psychological study of men and women in the grip of forces stronger than they are.
