Buch Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. George Villiers, Second Duke of Buckingham (1628 - 1687) was a Restoration Poet and man of letters; more than that, he was a landed statesman (one of the richest individuals in the realm), a Royalist who fought for King Charles against the Roundheads of Cromwell, took part in various battles, from which he effected at least two amazing escapes. In and out of royal favor, Villiers was often at the center of various intrigues, and so, was also in and out of the Tower. Villiers was considered to be the archetypal Restoration rake, and his debauchery and womanizing were legendary. Indeed he fought a duel with the husband of one of his paramours , whom he killed in the duel and subsequently put up the widow in his own home (where lived his own wife). the King of France bestowed a pension on Villiers for the upkeep of his mistress (Lady Shrewsbury, widow of the slain Lord Shrewsbury). A shocking life by any standard. Professor John O'Neill, has captured with wit and insight the intricate life of this amazing individual, but mainly he presents a history of, and, analyzes all of the extant literary works poems, dramas, etc., attributed to Villiers, and sets them firmly in their contemporary setting. Professor O'Neill's work on Villiers should remain one of the main sources for understanding this important, but mercurial historic personage - Poet, dramatist, statesman, warrior, rake, intriguer . and, perhaps : murderous scoundrel. A fascinating read! ******************************************************** SERIES : Twayne's English Authors Series, (TEAS 394) / TITLE : George Villiers, Second Duke of Buckingham (1628 - 1687) / AUTHOR : John H.
