Biography of this important pioneer in social reform and education. Samuel Gridley Howe (1801-1876) was born in Boston and attended Harvard Medical School. In 1824 he left for Greece and for three years helped that country fight for independence from Turkey. After briefly studying new methods of educating the blind in Paris, Howe established the Perkins Institution for the Blind in Boston in 1832. He invented alphabets, teaching devices, and created a whole new science that brought light and life to pupils who had previously been thought unteachable. He was commonly acknowledged as America's leading expert on the subject. Howe married Julia Ward in 1843 and both were active in the anti-slavery movement. They edited the anti-slavery journal Commonwealth. As chairman of the Boston Vigilance Committee, Howe aided in the rescue of fugitive slaves. He was one of the "Secret Six" who sponsored John Brown's raid. As chairman of the Massachusetts Board of State Charities, Howe spent nearly a decade strenuously lobbying Congress for funding and more humane treatment of the blind, deaf and mentally ill. Original rust-colored cloth . First Printing of the First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine condition/Very Good dust jacket. 8vo. 240pp.
