From introduction: The first chapter is partly a critique of armed force and partly a general analysis of the requirements of an acceptable substitute. The second and third are concerned to give an account of the nature and bases of satyagraha. The fourth considers some of the central issues arising in connexion with defence. Examination of the non-violent defence system is described in chapter 5. In chapter 6 the author attempts to assess this non-violent system of defence. In chapter 7 the author considers the prospects of non-violence in a world that appears to be committed to reliance upon armed force.
