Octavo, black cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, 412 pp. Near-Fine, with neat former-owner bookplate; in a Fine, mylar protected dust jacket. From dust jacket: Stalag Luft III, the historical setting for the film The Great Escape, was located about 90 miles southeast of Berlin. When it opened in April 1942, the camp held several hundred Allied prisoners in two compounds. By February 1945, when it was hastily evacuated, the camp had grown to a sprawling complex of six compounds and held a total of more than ten thousand prisoners. Based largely on a coded history secretly kept by te prisoners and smuggled out during the 1945 evacuation Stalag Luft III: The Secret Story is the first comprehensive account of what life in this Second World War prison camp was actually like. Arthur A. Durand also draws on first-hand sources, including personal interviews, diaries, logs, letters and recently declassified government documents. In both the mundane drudgery of the prisoners' daily lives and the dramatic reality of their struggle for survial against an enemy responsible for the deaths of millions of political and military prisoners, they used scarce resources in ingenious ways ot sustain their mental and physical health, recreating to the greatest extent possible all the things they had held most dear in the lives they had lived at home. They initiated impressive educational programmes, staged plays and concerts, and engaged in all kinds of sports. Despite their confinement, the prisoners managed to aid the war efort, establishing contact with London and Washington, and distracting the Germans with numerous escape attempts. Stalag Luft III: The Secret Story is both an impressive peice of historical scholarship and a dramatic, inspiring narrative. Military History, Prisoner of War, War Prison, Allied Prisoners, German Prison, World War II, Second World War, WWII. yslic.
