In the first comprehensive study by an historian of the events leading up to the Brussets Act of 1890, regarded at the time as the climax of the anti~slavery campaign, Dr Miers examines Britain's motives more closely. In particular she underlines the significance of the simultaneous scramble tor Africa and the fight to end the slave trade. Born in Zaire of American parents, and educated in Belgium and Britain, Suzanne Miers holds a PhD degree from the University of London. The widow of a British army officer and the mother of two children, Dr Miers has taught at the Universities of London, Sinqapore and Wisconsin. She is now an associate professor at Ohio University and is currently engaged in research on slavery and its suppression in Africa. The illustration on the front cover is of a slave chain~gang in Africa around 1894~ The illustration on the back cover is of a medallion of the Anti~Slavery Society; courtesy of the Anti~Slavery Society, London.
